Methods for Determining Soil Contaminant Profiles from Prompt-neutron Gamma Activation Data
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper summarizes three mathematical models used to describe how contaminant concentration profiles in soil may be inferred from the intensities of neutron-induced capture-gamma photon intensities measured at the soil surface. In particular, the linear regularization, linear regularization with an iterative positivity constraint, and the Backus-Gilbert methods are applied to the soil contamination problem. Examples of each of the three methods are presented for idealized test contaminant profiles.

Characterization of Am-Be neutron source based PGNAA setup using aqueous solutions of Chlorine and Boron
Background: A 5 Ci 241Am-Be radio isotopic neutron source-based prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) setup was designed for estimation of minimum detectable concentration (MDC) of elements in aqueous solutions. Materials and Methods: Performance variables related to PGNAA setup (source to sample distance, sample to detector distance and volume of water) were optimized experimentally...

Background: Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) is known as a non-invasive technique capable of measuring elemental concentration in voluminous samples in a short period of time. Also it is a valuable diagnostic tool for total body elemental measurements. 252Cf and 241Am-Be sources which are usually used in this method, generate not only neutrons, but also emit high-energy and unwa...

Developing a better understanding of xenon transport through porous systems is critical to predicting how this gas will enter the atmosphere after a below ground nuclear weapons test. Radioxenon monitoring is a vital part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) International Monitoring System. This work details the development of prompt gamma activation analysis for measuring the di...
متن کامل"Hot background" of the mobile inelastic neutron scattering system for soil carbon analysis.
The problem of gamma spectrum peak identification arises when conducting soil carbon analysis using the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) system. Some spectral peaks could be associated with radioisotopes appearing due to neutron activation of both the measurement system and soil samples. The investigation of "hot background" gamma spectra from the construction materials, whole measurement sys...
متن کاملA Monte Carlo study of SPECT in boron neutron capture therapy for a heterogeneous human phantom
Background: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a binary radiotherapy combining biochemical targeting with neutron irradiation. However, monitoring the boron distribution is a fundamental problem in BNCT. Prompt gamma rays emitted by boron capture reaction can be used to address the issue. Materials and Methods: The general-purpose Monte Carlo toolkits Geant4 and MCNP were used for the simu...
